One Rank One Pension Scheme

Introduction

One rank one pension scheme is also known as OROP. In other words the OROP is basically “same pension, for same rank, for same length of service, irrespective of the date of retirement”.  This is a demand that has been put forward by the Indian Armed forces and veterans. In the year 1973, this demand was first been put forward to the Congress government.

Details

The basic demand of the OROP is that irrespective of the date of retirement the pension should be provided according to the rank and position held in the armed forces. For example, suppose there is an officer who has served the army for fifteen years from the 1970 to 1985 and there is another officer who has served the army from 2000 to 2015, now according to the demands of the OROP both the officers should get equal pension irrespective of their date of retirement. As the position and the rank held by them was same. The current prevalent system: –

  • In the prevalent system the pension amount will get determined on the last salary drawn.
  • The present system gives importance to the drawn salary and not to the time length of the service.
  • In the present system a lieutenant general, retired in 1995 is entitled to a pension amount that is ten percent lower than the amount sanctioned to colonel who retires after 2006.
  • In a very similar fashion a jawan, retired in the year 1995 will receive eighty percent less pension amount than the jawan who retires after January 1st
